community college, you have been asked to provide ideas for assessing the
writing ability of entering learners through the use of traditional and
nontraditional methods. The assessment approaches and instruments you recommend
will be used to decide who needs a developmental writing class and who should
take the regular writing course. Compose a paper (in APA-manuscript format)
that discusses several possible traditional and nontraditional assessment instruments,
including the strengths and weaknesses of each and the impact of the instrument

Purpose/use of Assessments. There are five primary uses
of assessments as they pertain to the learning process:
o Diagnostic:
Used primarily to identify the needs and prior knowledge of participants for
the purpose of direction them to the most appropriate learning experience.
• Formative: Has
the primary objective of providing practice to support the transfer of learning
by providing for prescriptive feedback .
• Needs:
Used to determine the knowledge, skills, abilities, and attitudes of a sample to
assist with gap analysis and course development. Gap analysis determines the
variance between what the learner knows (the current state) and what they are
required to know (the goal state).
• Reaction: Used
to determine the satisfaction level with a learning or assessment experience.
• Summative: Primarily
used to determine a learner’s proficiency through the use of a student
assessment.
What are Traditional Assessment Instruments? Typically,
traditional assessments include tests, quizzes, norm referenced assessments,
and criterion referenced assessments.
What are Non-traditional Assessment
Instruments? Generally speaking, non-traditional assessments require
learners to perform, create, produce or do something.
